Be still, my heart! A guide to Tolkien editions!!!
This is just what I need. I'm going to be back to go over this post with a fine-tooth comb - I need to purchase some Tolkien for our kiddos. (Our editions are not good, are super-old, and are falling to pieces.)
I can't wait to read the book on Tolkien by Holly Ordway. Some years ago I read her book, "Not God's Type," and it was amazing. I can't wait to read more by her.
In the traditional church calendar, March 25th is also the feast of the Annunciation. Such good stuff.
Well, if a book gets read to death, that’s a good thing! It does sound like it’s time for a new edition.
Holly Ordway’s book is very good! I initially read it because I wanted a Tolkien biography, and there really aren’t any good ones, and this was the closest I could get. It doubles as biography and exploration of Tolkien’s Catholic faith.
I have requested the Ordway from the library - can't wait! :) I also wanted to add that in terms of books exploring the spirituality of "Lord of the Rings," I am extremely fond of "The Gospel According to Tolkien." I haven't read it for some years, but it was pretty mind-blowing. I need to get it out again.
Love this. I was literally this week looking to buy an illustrated set of the series (the one I currently have has tiny print and no pictures) in hopes of reading it to my 9-year-old son this summer. I'd love to have Tolkien's own artwork in it but need portable books for travel. So maybe we'll go for the Alan Lee ones.
Have you tried The Hobbit illustrated by Jemima Catlin? We loved it and have loaned it out to several friends.
I didn't put this in the article, because this set doesn't have all of Tolkien's illustrations, but I remembered that there is a boxed set with his LOTR cover illustrations. https://amzn.to/4scclkZ
I think I’ve seen the Catlin illustrations in a friend’s book — they looked very sweet and good, too! I don’t think any illustrator truly rivals Tolkien for his art in The Hobbit (it’s so good!), but his art for LOTR is more replaceable.

Love all that you have to say here!!

Thanks again for this post!
Just used your post to purchase a new set of Tolkien and Tolkien art for our family. Thanks, Rachelle! :)
This makes me so happy!

I miss the Morgan a lot....
Never do I miss NYC so much as when I think of the libraries and museums.
